Investing in Clayton's Future with Capital Improvement Projects

Home Posted on February 18, 2025

As the nation recognizes Engineers Week from February 16-22, the Town of Clayton is highlighting the people who help shape its future. Project Controls Specialist Shannon Poole plays a crucial role in keeping important projects on track that improve daily life for residents.

Capital improvement projects are big investments that ensure Clayton runs smoothly. Some are easy to see, like new sidewalks and park upgrades. Others, like underground water and sewer improvements, take place behind the scenes but are just as significant for the Town’s future. “Every project we take on is designed to support the community’s needs - whether it improves daily life or reinforces essential services,” Poole explained. “No matter the scale or visibility, each investment strengthens the Town’s foundation and enhances the quality of life for residents.”

One of the biggest challenges in the Town is upgrading downtown infrastructure while working around existing roads, utilities, and historic spaces. Careful planning and teamwork are key. “One of my favorite parts of my job is working with different departments,” Poole said. “The better we communicate, the smoother the project goes.”

Timing is also important. Some projects, like roadwork, may be scheduled after necessary utility upgrades to maintain efficiency. “By coordinating improvements, we maximize resources, use taxpayer dollars wisely, and reduce disruptions,” Poole clarified.

One project Poole is especially proud of is the ongoing Clayton Parks and Recreation renovations. “I’ve seen every stage of this bond referendum from concept to construction,” she said. “It’s been rewarding to watch these parks transform into spaces where families can come together and have fun.” The Clayton Community Center and Park are nearing completion and will soon feature Pickleball courts, upgraded tennis courts, expanded parking, and a new playground for residents to enjoy.

Clayton is evolving, and with that comes new opportunities and considerations. The Town is working on a new dashboard that will provide real-time updates on ongoing projects, estimated completion dates, and any changes that may affect residents. “People just want to know what’s happening,” Poole added. “We want to keep them in the loop and provide transparency.” While the exact launch date is still to be determined, the Town is committed to keeping everyone updated throughout the process.

No two days in engineering are the same, and that’s what Poole loves most. Whether a project is in the planning or construction phase, she keeps things moving forward. “The most rewarding part of my job is knowing that the work we do today helps make Clayton a better place tomorrow,” she said.

Engineers like Poole are integral in shaping Clayton’s future, working on projects – big and small – that contribute to the Town’s evolution and vitality. To learn more about the
